Bloomberg invites exceptional Ph.D. students working in broadly-construed data science, including natural language processing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to apply for the inaugural Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship for the academic year of 2018-2019. The goal of this fellowship is to provide support and encouragement of groundbreaking publications in both academic journals and conference proceedings.

Ph.D. Grant Details

  • The fellowship will cover 100% of the recipient’s tuition.
  • Recipients will be given a stipend of USD 35,000 for their living expenses.
  • Recipients will be given USD 5,000 to attend professional conferences.
  • Recipients will have Bloomberg mentors and will have to complete a 12-week summer internship at Bloomberg.
  • Recipients will be given the opportunity to renew their fellowship annually, for up to three years total.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be full-time students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program, and in their third year or higher during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Applicants must attend a school in the United States of America during the duration of the award.
  • Recipients must remain enrolled as full-time students for the duration of the award. If this status is not maintained, the remainder of the award will be forfeited
  • Recipients must attend the academic year kickoff week each fall at Bloomberg’s main office in New York. Bloomberg will bear all expenses for this week.
  • Recipients must complete a 12-week summer internship in New York, and be eligible to work in this capacity. This is a research internship and the application process will be research-focused.

Application Details

Applicants must submit only one proposal for the 2018-2019 academic year, and this proposal must be submitted to only one grant program; cross-submission to the Bloomberg Ph.D. Fellowship and the Research Grant Program will result in disqualification. 

Applications to the Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship will consist of the following documents:

  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae with links to publications (if available)
  • A two-page research proposal, composed of the following:
    • Title: Please provide names, contacts, and affiliations of you and your collaborators, along with the proposal title. If any Bloomberg employees were consulted in preparing the proposal, please provide their names as well.
    • Technical Details: The bulk of the proposal should be directed at a technical data science audience, but we also ask that it include one or two paragraphs making the case to a non-expert. A typical proposal will contain:
      • Abstract: problem statement and the applicant’s ideas
      • Description: describe the proposed work and expected results
      • References
      • Data Policy: Please briefly state the means by which the results produced by this funding will be disseminated (e.g., open source software, open access journals, conferences, and/or presentations).
  • Applicants may submit up to three reference letters supporting the applicant, however a reference letter from the applicant’s Ph.D. advisor or proposed advisor is mandatory
  • (Optional) One-page resume of the applicant’s Ph.D. advisor
