Application Deadline-December 28, 2018
Schmidt Ocean Institute seeks to provide undergraduate and graduate students with a chance to take part in seagoing scientific research aboard Falkor in coordination with our organization and the principal investigators leading at-sea research projects. Schmidt Ocean Institute aims to support technologically advanced research at sea and openly communicate the findings of our supported research cruises. The Student Opportunities Program enables us to support training of the next generation of ocean scientists and technology developers and ignite the spark of passion for ocean exploration in their minds. We hope that by offering indispensable ocean-going experience, participating students will gain invaluable skills at sea while working with advanced oceanographic tools and technologies.
Student berthing space may be made available if a science party has unused berthing. Students will work alongside a science team already scheduled to conduct research aboard Falkor. Applicants should possess knowledge in at least one of the following disciplines: biology, chemistry, physics, geology, oceanography, or marine technology (e.g. engineering, software, etc.). Interested students must be enrolled full time in an accredited institution seeking a college, baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree, or be serving in a post-graduate position. Time will be given to students to keep up with their studies while they are on board.
Students must complete an online application and submit all supplemental information indicated below. In addition to application approval, successful applicants will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and have a passport valid for at least six months past the start of the cruise. Depending on the student’s nationality a visa may be required.
Schmidt Ocean Institute does not provide financial support for students taking part in these opportunities. Equipment may be available from the suite of scientific systems aboard Falkor based on the current research plans and interest of each student.
How to Apply:
Student applicants must fill out an online application and provide the following supplemental information:
- Two signed letters of recommendation, including one from the student’s major professor (or professional equivalent); if no major professor exists, a faculty person academically knowing the applicant best may be substituted. Please note these letters should be submitted directly via email by reference. They will be due the same deadline/date as online applications.
- Personal and academic curriculum vitae or resume (not to exceed two pages).
