SWAP: UK/Ukraine Artist Residence Programme 2016

The British Council Ukraine is delighted to launch its new artistic residence programme, connecting artists from Ukraine and the UK and supporting their professional development and internationalisation. The programme is also designed to give artists the time to research, reflect and explore the UK/Ukraine’s vast artistic traditions.

Call for applications: UK artists

We work with the Liverpool Biennial in the UK (with whom we already ran residencies for Ukraine-based artists during March-April 2016), and in Ukraine we work with the most innovative and experimental visual arts’ organisations across the country.

For this second phase of our programme, we’re looking for 6 talented UK artists to spend ca.1 month in one of the following residence opportunities:

Biruchiy peninsula (Sea of Azov): Biruchiy Contemporary Art Project (September 2016)

Kharkiv: NonStopMedia Festival – a residence programme by Kharkiv’s Municipal Art Gallery as part of their biennial festival (10 August – 10 September 2016)

Kharkiv: YermilovCentre (August 2016)

Kyiv: The Muzychi Expanded History Project – a residence programme by Alevtina Kakhidze (September 2016),

Kyiv: 33 Soshenko Art Studios (September 2016)

(West Ukraine/Carpathians): Sorry, no rooms available – a residence programme by Petro Ryaska (September 2016)

1 The opportunity is open to all UK residents.
2 Applicants must be professional artists and/ or last year- university students of an arts’ degree.
3 There are no language requirements but Ukrainian and/or Russian are desirable.
4 The British Council Ukraine is able to accommodate medical carers, service animals, or other medical needs. Please detail if you have any requirements in your application so we have plenty of time to accommodate your needs.
5 Overnight guests, spouses, children and pets are not permitted to stay in housing
during the residency
Application Procedure
  • Applications are open from 25 May-27 June 2016, and we will be announcing our selection on 4 July 2016.
  • The residences will start on 10 August (Kharkiv) and on 1 September (the rest, as per above), so applicants need to make sure they can take 3-4 weeks off during that time.
