About the multimedia internship

The internship is particularly suited to journalism or media students/recent graduates seeking practical industry experience on multimedia production. It is an active, hands-on internship and individual initiative and motivation are determinates of success. This internship is offered for 2 days per week (negotiable) for 3 months. The role is unsalaried, however, interns will be paid $20.00 per day to cover lunch and travel expenses. Internships are located at The Conversation’s newsroom in Melbourne or Sydney. The Conversation is a non-profit organisation and our internships meet Fair Work Australia Guidelines.

About the multimedia internship role

There are three streams available: (i) graphic design/illustration (ii) video or audio (podcast) editing/production (iii) data journalism and visualisation

Please nominate in your application which stream you are applying for. To be considered for an internship, applicants will need to demonstrate the following for the respective streams:

Graphic design/illustration

  • An interest and experience in graphic design in a journalism context
  • Skills and experience in Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator
  • Sound understanding of visual design principles
  • Passionate about communicating complex concepts and ideas to a general audience
  • Excellent teamwork skills and willingness to work with a range of people
  • A keen interest and understanding of the media and public affairs

Video editing and production

  • Experience with video and/or editing (ideally Adobe Premiere)
  • Competence in conducting interviews (via phone or in person) both for production and for pre-interview screening
  • Experience with operating video equipment (including recording of audio)
  • Skills in animation and special effects would be a bonus (eg. After Effects, or Adobe Animate)
  • Excellent teamwork skills and willingness to work with a range of people
  • A keen interest and understanding of the media and public affairs

Data journalism and visualisation

  • Passionate about data and data representation
  • A desire to communicate complex data and ideas to a general public audience
  • The ability to search and clean data
  • Experience using spreadsheets (or other data analysis software) and at crunching numbers and creating charts
  • Basic knowledge of charting and mapping tools (eg. Datawrapper, Carto)
  • Applicants with coding skills (eg. JavaScript, Python, etc ) are encouraged to apply
  • Excellent teamwork skills and willingness to work with a range of people
  • A keen interest and understanding of the media and public affairs
