Application Deadline: 5th June 2019 at 6pm
The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is open for entries until June 5th 2019 at 6pm. The prize is a partnership between the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester and property company Bruntwood. The Prize is an opportunity for writers of any background and experience to enter unperformed plays to be judged by a panel of industry experts for a chance to win part of a prize fund totalling £40,000.
At the heart of the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is the principal that anyone and everyone can enter the Prize – it is entirely anonymous and scripts are judged purely on the basis of the work alone and with no knowledge of the identity of the playwright. Since its inception in 2005 over 13,000 scripts have been entered, £256,000 has been awarded to 28 prize winning writers and 24 winning productions have been staged in 38 UK wide venues.
For 2019 they intend to make the following awards:
• The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting – a first prize of £16,000
• A Judges’ Award of £8,000
• An Original New Voice Award of £8,000 – available to playwrights who have not had a full-length play professionally produced for 12 performances or more in a professional venue. All scripts entered by these playwrights are also eligible for the Bruntwood Prize, and Judges’ Award.
• An International Award of £8,000 – open to international playwrights invited to anonymously apply via their named international partners: The BANFF Centre in Canada; Belvoir Theatre and Melbourne Theatre Company in Australia; Berkeley Rep and Playwrights Horizons in the USA. No other international submissions can be considered at this time.
